‘King’ OAP places
The SHS production of “The King Stag” was named alternate play in the zone level One Act Play competition in Rankin
this week.
Both the Comstock and Buena Vista plays will advance to the district level competition next week.
Julianna Larrinaga and
Darren Seidel were named All Star Cast members while Juliana Castro received Honorable Mention.
Julianna portrays Smereldina,
daughter of General Spavinto, who is out to win the King’s heart. Darren’s character, Trufaldino, is the verbose magician’s
assistant. Juliana is cast as a magical human-sized yellow parrot, complete with colorful feathers and resplendent tail.
Isabel
Rivera received the technical award for her superior actions as part of the crew.
“The King Stag” will be performed in the auditorium
in early April at a time to be announced for local fans to enjoy.
They will see King Deramo depend on a magic statue to find
an honest queen for his kingdom, while a jealous prime minister tries to seize control of the kingdom. After many exciting plots
twists all ends rightly.
$1,000 in pennies
Sanderson Elementary students collected $1000.01, mostly pennies, in the Pennies for Patients fund raiser for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
School Nurse Violta McDonald reported the fourth and fifth grade class collected the most money, bringing
in $412.59 in loose change.
The Kindergarten class came in second, raising $339.78. These two classes were rewarded with pizza
parties and, because the school-wide goal of $100 was surpassed ten times over, all students were treated to ice cream.
Pennies for
Patients is a new fund raiser for the school this year.
McDonald said she received a letter from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
asking Sanderson Elementary to participate.
“The kids really loved it!” she said, but added that counting and rolling coins
was not her favorite pasttime.
McDonald said there is a possibility the elementary may have a Bike-A-Thon to raise money for St. Jude’s
Children’s Hospital later in the spring.
If a Bike-A-Thon does materialize, she hopes an officer from the Sheriff’s Department can give a bike safety class beforehand.
