SANDERSON – If there was any “good news” for Terrell County Independent School District this week, it was that the “recapture” rate is down from as high as 83 percent in recent years.

This is the percentage of tax dollars the district has to send to the state to be redistributed to other districts under the state’s “Robin Hood” finance scheme.

At a special meeting Tuesday, the Board approved a very tight budget of $8 million for the new school year, which includes about $4.8 million in “recapture” payments.

Business Manager Blain Chriesman said the recapture rate this year will be in the “65-percent range.” The exact rate will not be known until later in the school year.

How much “Chapter 41” districts – known as “property rich” districts – have to share with “Chapter 42” or ‘property poor” districts is based on a formula computed from the number of students in school and the property values in the district.

Nopalito set for tomorrow

SANDERSON – The weight of a giant tank destined for the “Century Plant” delayed the move again here this week.

Project Manager James Weston said the first of the two giant tanks weighed in at 950,000 pounds on Tuesday, 21,000 pounds over the expected weight.

SANDERSON – The 11 Junior Eagles have been preparing for their first game at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, when they host the Grandfalls Junior Cowboys at Eagle Stadium.

Eighth graders on the team are Anthony Fuéntez, Alexis Olivares, Chris Birkenfeld, James Keyser, Joseph Carrasco, Luis Garza and Santiago Gonzales.

Marfa Lights this weekend

MARFA – Among the events this Labor Day weekend is the 24th Annual Marfa Lights Festival here today, Sept. 3, through Sunday, Sept. 5, at the Courthouse Square here.

Organizers promise food, crafts and fun for the entire family. There also will be live music and entertainment throughout the weekend.

ALPINE – As if there weren’t enough to do this weekend with a host of activities in Sanderson and the annual Marfa Lights Festival the other direction, the annual Big Bend Balloon Bash here is expectedto fill the skies with 15 or more colorful hot air balloons.
   The balloons, which get their lift from giant air bags heated by propane burners, will launch each day, tomorrow, Sunday and Monday, Sept. 4, 5 and 6, weather permitting, from Sierra La Rana, a gated community two miles south of here on State Highway 118.

Meyers gets life for murder

SONORA – David Michael Meyers of Fort Stockton pleaded guilty to two counts of capital murder Monday in the death of 25-year-old Drew Aaron Slater of Fort Stockton and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance for parole.

The plea came just as juror were about to be seated for a trail in the case before Dist. Judge Pedro Gomez, Jr.

Pachanga tickets on sale

SANDERSON – Tickets will go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 7, for the 13th Annual “Pachanga” commemorating the naming of Terrell County as the Cactus Capital of Texas.

The Pachanga, on Oct. 9 this year, will have a fiesta theme, the Arts and Education Alliance of Sanderson Committee said this week.

White House snubs Perry

EL PASO – Gov. Rick Perry’s office complained this week that the White House denied the governor a face-to-face meet-ing with President Obama Tuesday when the President was here to honor Army troops at nearby Fort Bliss.

White House spokesman Luis Miranda said Perry "was offered but declined" a meeting on border security with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napo-litano and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan.

State targets drunk drivers

AUSTIN — The Texas Department of Transportation, police departments and sheriff’s offices across the Lone Star state will work together this Labor Day weekend to reduce impaired driving in its annual Drink, Drive, Go to Jail campaign.

Law enforcement statewide will be working overtime to find and arrest impaired drivers through the holiday weekend.

Water shortage seen

EL PASO – Lower than anti-cipated mountain snowpack runoff into the Rio Grande has resulted in less water available to all users this year and lower reservoir levels. 

The US Bureau of Reclamation here estimates that Elephant Butte reservoir will be at 16.1 percent of full water capacity over Labor Day weekend with water levels 80 feet below the dam spillway.

MIDLAND — Texas Comp-troller Susan Combs has recognized achievements in technical education and praised financial transparency efforts by local governments.

Combs awarded $54,812 to Midland College from the Jobs and Education for Texans Career and Technical Scholarship Fund, which provides grants to fun scholarships for students enrolled in approved training programs.

TFS warns of fire danger

AUSTIN – The Texas Forest service pleaded with dove hunters this week not to “be a bird brain” about the danger of rangeland fires.

With much of Texas still hot and dry and wildfires continuing to spark up across the state, dove hunters should be especially careful when heading out this week, TFS said.

AUSTIN — A state plan again this year will allow families to lock in the cost of tuition and fees at public colleges and universities in the state by enrolling in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund, the state’s prepaid tuition plan.

McCAMEY – The Sanderson Eagles football team opened the season against their traditional opener, the always-tough Grady here Saturday but, unlike most games against the Wildcats, this one went the full 40 minutes.

It was still a loss, at 50-8, but the Eagles held their own against a much larger school.

Move of tank  delayed again

TANK CROSSINGA giant tank atop a multi-wheel trailer stretched across Downie Street near the Sanderson Post Office this week, preparing for the move to the Century Plant 37 miles north. The move has been delayed while the vehicle was re-weighed.

BB Balloon bash set

BALLOON BASH Weather permitting this weekend, the skies around Alpine should be filled with colorful hot-air balloons. The annual Big Bend Balloon Bash begins tomorrow and lasts through Monday, Sept. 4 through 6, at Sierra La Rana, a gated community two miles south of town.

ALPINE – In an effort to investigate the alarming and unexplained decline of pronghorn antelope, The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department awarded an $111,210 grant to the Borderlands Research Institute for Natural Resource Management at Sul Ross State University here.

PRONGHORN ANTELOPE – A serious decline in antelope numbers has prompted  the Texas parks and Wildlife to award a grant to the Borderlands Research Institute for Natural Resource Management at Sul Ross State University to identify possible causes and to evaluate two competing hypotheses regarding pronghorn survival and productivity.

RED HATHenry Beth Hogg received her own personal “red hat” at the Seniors Lunch last week at the Terrell County Community Building. Helen Zeyen presented the hat, donated by a friend in Arizona, saying Hogg had expressed an interest in owning one. Ron Valdez looked on. Hogg, who is one of Sanderson’s most active volunteers, said she does not plan to join the Red Hat Society, a women’s organization dedicated to making the world a better place. “I don’t plan to join any more organizations,” she said.

OLDEST MAN - Leopoldo G. Calzada, aka Polo, was honored recently with a party celebrating his 100th birthday.  He was born August 7, 1910, in Sanderson and remains the oldest man in Terrell County.
