SANDERSON – A proposed “convention center” in downtown Sanderson should be an attractive, multi-use center that could cause visitors to stop and spend money here.

But it must be built “within budget” and not with borrowed funds.

That was the strong message of most of the approximately 60 Terrell County citizens at a public workshop on the convention center Tuesday.

After the meeting, County Judge Leo Smith told the News Leader he got the message and he would recommend keeping the initial facility within the $750,000 “on hand” and seek expansion in the future only when the economy allows it.

The meeting in the District Courtroom on the second floor of the Courthouse drew one of the largest crowds in recent years.

There was one complaint of “snide remarks” mumbled in the back of the room but the meeting was generally cordial.

Most speakers referred to the $750,000 in the “venue tax” fund collected as a half-cent sales tax.

Attorney General Gregg Abbott ruled five years ago the fund can be used “only” in conjunction with a “convention center.”
