SANDERSON – The violence and corruption from the Mexican drug cartels are spilling over to the US side and our response is not always
appropriate, it was alleged this week.
Will Hurd of San Antonio, who has served for nine years as an operations officer for the US
Central Intelligence Agency, is running for the Republican nomination to the US Congress.
He met with a small group of local supporters
Tuesday at the RoundHouse Café here.
Hurd faces Francisco “Quico” Canseco for the Republican nomination to face US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez
in the November general election.
“Early” voting ends today, April 9, at the Terrell County Courthouse and the primary runoff election
is Tuesday, also at the Terrell County Clerk’s Office.
Hurd said those who voted in the Democratic primary cannot run in the Republican
runoff but those who did not vote on March 2 will be able to vote in either runoff.
He said important issues include the border as
well as fiscal responsibility, which he will address in both campaigns.
Hurd said he is working throughout the district, visiting three cities per day in 16 counties, while his opponent is concentrating his efforts in San Antonio.
He said San Antonio has about twice as many registered voters as the rest of his district but a heavy

SANDERSON – April is the month for motors in the area, both those powering automobiles and ones driving the two-wheel variety.
The Annual Big Bend Open Road Race between Fort Stockton and Sanderson is Saturday, April 24, and a week later, motorcycles will invade the Sanderson area for the West of the Pecos Motorcycle Run.

SandRidge to expand
OKLAHOMA CITY – SandRidge Energy, Inc., of Oklahoma City said this week it will increase its oil production with
the acquisition of Arena Resources, Inc., of Tulsa.
The two announced jointly this week they have entered into a definitive merger agreement which will position SandRidge as one of the largest producers of oil and gas in West Texas.

Plane crash kills one
BALMORHEA – One man was killed Sunday when his light plane crashed into Balmorhea Lake near here.
The FAA in Fort Worth identified the pilot as Charles L. Stutesman, 77, of Bowie, AZ.

IMPERIAL – The Sanderson Junior High School girls placed second overall out of 12 teams with 113
points at the district track meet hosted by Buena Vista ISD Thursday, April 1.
Brianna Lozano came in first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.6, first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.7 and second in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

HOUSTON – Tumbleweed Smith, whose column “Texas Tales” appears in newspapers across the state including the News Leader, was commissioned
an admiral in the Texas Navy last week.
The distinction from the governor’s office is a means of honoring people for their service
to Texas.
The proclamation, signed by Governor Rick Perry, said Tumbleweed has been diligent in preserving the rich oral history
of the state.

SANDERSON – The number of Sanderson children hunting for Easter Eggs Saturday morning on the Courthouse Lawn was reportedly greater
than last year.
In any event, a seemingly endless swarm of children of all ages blanketed the grass in an event sponsored by the Terrell
County Sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Clint McDonald, who has hosted the hunt for 12 years, said his office will continue to do so as long
as he is sheriff.
The Pecos County State Bank donated 100 gold coins for the egg hunters to find. Each coin worth $1 was hidden inside of a colorful plastic egg.

last week saying the athletic director killed the football program there because of the troubles he had in scheduling games.

Band gets high marks at Wink
WINK – The two Sanderson ISD bands that participated in the Fifth Annual Wink Band Festival here last
week took home top honors from judges.
Band Director Eric Cooksey said the junior high band consisting of sixth and seventh graders, played two selections for judge Brian Owen, director of bands at Ballinger.

TOMA lawsuit to be retried

PECOS - After receiving a “moot” decision from the Fifth Circuit US Court of Appeals, in New Orleans last fall, former Alpine City Councilman Avinash Rangra, along with five Texas cities and 15 elected officials, has filed a new lawsuit challenging the Texas Open Meetings Act.
Judge Robert Junell who ruled on the initial federal case in 2006, will preside again as the new suit was filed at the US District Court for the Western District of Texas courtroom here.

Visitor Center counts 287
SANDERSON – There were 287 visitors who signed in at the Terrell County Visitor Center here last month, center
boss Carolyn Hotto said this week.
March visitors who added their names to the guest book came from Canada, France, Belgium, Germany, Australia and England.

SANDERSON – US Border Patrol agents arrested two US citizens and three Mexican citizens in a late model SUV between here and Fort
Stockton last week.
Agents also confiscated 213 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $170,400.
The three backpackers carried the dope to US Highway 285 where they were picked up.

daughters Jenna who is 11 years old, Georgia, who’s nine and seven-year-old Tyler. All three girls are home schooled by mom.

SANDERSON – The semi-annual Terrell County Rabies Clinic will be 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow, April 10, at the carport
on the north side of the Courthouse.
Animals can get a free rabies vaccination with a $3 registration fee. Other immunizations are available at a “set fee.”

CENTURY PLANT – The $1.1 billion Century Plant is rising from the desert 27 miles north of Sanderson. SandRidge Energy of Oklahoma
City has teamed with Oxy Petroleum of Los Angeles to build the plant, which will separate carbon dioxide from methane. Oxy will use
the CO2 for its oil extraction and SandRidge will use the methane as natural gas for its customers.
HONORED – Odessa Police Lt. Art Fuentes, a native of Sanderson, accepted an Odessa Links Award last month from Dorothy Reyes. Fuentes,
the son of Arturo and Bertha Fuentes of Sanderson, is a 1984 graduate of Sanderson High School.

aliens and two US citizens were arrested when Border Patrol stopped the vehicle on US 285 north of Sanderson.

Imperial last week. Junior High boys and girls both placed second overall at the meet.
