SANDERSON – If an employee shows up sick, send him home and don’t send children to school if they are sick.
Those were among the stern
warnings by Cactus Health Medical Director Dr. J.P. Schwartz Monday in response to a potential “pandemic” of swine flu.
Schwartz said
some parents will send sick children to school because they have no place else to look after them while they are at work.
“Employers,
don’t fire them because their kids are sick,” he said.
Schwartz said places like restaurants and convenience stores are likely places
to spread disease.
“If an employee shows up sick, you’ve got to send him home,” he said. “Too often, they let people work when they
shouldn’t.”
Saying there is “no need to panic yet,” Terrell County Judge Leo Smith presided over a meeting Monday of county
health and law enforcement personnel to discuss ways to deal with a potential outbreak of swine flu.
He called an “emergency meeting”
of County Commissioners Wednesday morning to get approval to purchase additional food, medical supplies and other equipment to deal
with an emergency should it occur.
The disease killed its first victim in the US this week out of fewer than 200 cases nationwide. A 23-month-old Brownsville baby was the first death outside Mexico attributed to the disease.
