AUSTIN – Travis Roberts of Sanderson won a gold medal at the UIL state track meet here Friday. Twice.
He ran the mile Friday night
in 4:24.55, not enough to beat the 1975 state record, also held by a Sanderson High School student, but it was enough for Travis to
take home the gold for the second time in the same day.
Cameron Courtney of Timpson came in second, just 0.35 seconds behind Travis.
Dylan Doss of Water Valley was third with a time of 4:28.68.
Brother William Roberts was fifth, posting a time of 4:35.29.
Earlier,
Travis ran the two-mile, or 3,200-meter-run, in 9:34.5, a few steps ahead of Dylan.
Third was Jonathon Lira of Plains who has frequently
shared the podium with the Sanderson senior in meets leading up to the Big One.
“All the hard work and dedication paid off,” Athletic
Director Mark Dominguez told the School Board Monday.
“We are all very proud of you all,” Board President Ada Lee Robbins told the
Roberts brothers, who were presented to the board at the meeting.
In the mile race Friday night, Travis tried for the state record
held by Rick Marquez of Andrews, who wore a Sanderson Eagle uniform when he set it at 4:13.8 in 1975.
At his homecoming Saturday, Travis
was asked if he thought about the Marquez record and his chances of taking it away.
“Kind of,” he said. “But not really.”
Travis said he didn’t have the competition locally to make him try that much harder. He agreed it really helps get that extra gear when you hear someone right on your heels.
In both races Friday, the second place runner pushed
