IN DHS DRESSThe Predator drone, shown here in its new Customs and Border Patrol livery, has provided unmanned aerial reconnaissance and even a weapons platform in military missions around the world. It will soon see service along the Texas-Mexico border. The FAA has approved the aerial surveillance from El Paso to just east of Big Bend National Park and is considering the rest of the Texas-Mexico border.

SANDERSON – Tomorrow is Graduation Day, 2010, a date that for a dozen Sanderson residents has been etched in their brains for most of their young lives, at least since they began their quest in kindergarten some 13 years ago.

The 12 high school seniors will flip their tassels tomorrow night and become high school graduates. The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. in the High School Auditorium in the old high school building.

Several events over the last few weeks have led up to the Big Event, including the annual Awards Banquet last week and the painting of the street in front of the high school buildings Tuesday evening.  

This will be the only class that got to paint in front of both the old building and the new one, which the school moved into just this month.

Future senior classes will paint in front of the new building on Second Street.

The new classrooms were provided by a $14 million bond issue approved by the voters three years ago.

The Big Day will end with Project Graduation, the all-night, chemical-free party in the High School Gym after the graduation ceremony ends.

Action on ‘Center’ seen

Orbits seen ‘out of whack’

SANDERSON – Many generous donations of food were made for this year’s 4-H banquet in Fair Hall Saturday night.

While guests were being served, Cameron Baker, Shawn Stegall and David “Vito” Martinez performed a couple of songs for the crowd.

SCHOLAR ATHLETESTwo top awards each year are to the Sanderson High School Scholar Athletes. This year’s winners were Chris Marquez and Vicky Busch. Vicky also is valedictorian and won several other honors. Chris received honors in cross country and track.

COMING UPBids are being sought for a new “convention center” to be built at Oak and Second in Sanderson in hopes of catching tourists’ eyes as they pass through town, perhaps encouraging them to stop and look around. The long-delayed plans could go to contract next month if bids, to be opened June 14, are within reach.

Chamber releases 2 more brochures

JUST OUTThe Sanderson chamber of Commerce has released several brochures and booklets recently to be placed in area hotels, motels and visitor centers. The newest are a reprinting of the single-panel “rack card,” left, and a brand new brochure explaining why Terrell County was named “Cactus Capital of Texas” by the Texas Legislature in 1999.

Agents seize a ‘ton of pot’

POTLOAD OF POTThe back seat of this pickup was loaded with bundles of pot after US Border Patrol agents gave chase, ending in a crash this week west of Marathon. The driver was able to get away but the pot now belongs to the US government.

Power off as storm hits area

STORM CLOUDSA thunderstorm rumbled over the top of the hills west of Sanderson Monday night, causing a seven-hour blackout and dropping rain and hail over much of the area. Angela Stegall reported seeing two funnel clouds 13 miles north of Sanderson but they did not touch down. Serious damage was reported at ranches in the area.
