SANDERSON – An agreement may be near on the contentious issue of county maintenance on a county road where it crosses Independence Creek in east Terrell County.

Terrell County Commissioners went into “executive” or closed-door session during their monthly meeting Monday to speak by telephone with attorney Bob Bass, who is representing the county on the issue.

After the session, commissioners voted to direct Bass to “negotiate terms of a contract regarding Independence Creek Road.”

County Judge Leo Smith said he hoped the two sides could “see what will work for everybody.”

Earlier in the meeting, attorney Maureen Murphy Singleton of Houston, representing the Chandler family, said the road has served as a public road for many years, providing access for hunters and others, including guests to the Chandler Guest Ranch.

She said the family is considering re-opening the guest ranch but, in the meantime, others still use the road.

She said it also is needed for emergency personnel, utility companies and others who need access to properties beyond the creek.

“Now, with homeland security issues, there is more need than ever for law enforcement personnel to access the property,” she said.     Read more...
