CORONATION – Hannah Black, the 2007 Sanderson Homecoming queen, passed crown to her successors Friday. The new queen is Miriam Nuñez
and Phillip Lascano is the new king. The ceremony was just before the Homecoming football game with Buena Vista.
BRIDGE OUT – The State Highway 349 bridge over Big Canyon, closed for more than a week, should re-open this weekend – barring unforeseen difficulties. Heavy rains Sept. 10 and 11 caused significant damage to the approaches, particularly eastbound. There was damage to the bridge at Independence Creek and other road surfaces.

over his shoulder. Longhorn Joey Acosta, 1, came to help.
GOING, GOING – The “09” sign on top of a pile of lumber was not long for this world when the photo was snapped Thursday, Oct. 2. The
traditional parade and bonfire was a highlight of a week of Homecoming activities that culminated in the crowning of King Phillip
Lascano and Miriam Nuñez and the football game with Buena Vista.
CARRYING THE TORCH – Sanderson High School seniors all carried a torch Thursday, Oct. 2, with which to set a pile of lumber ablaze.
The traditional Homecoming parade and bonfire were a prelude to Friday’s football game in which Sanderson’s Eagles bested Buena Vista
58-21.
BIG BASH – Jaime Rodriguez took his turn with a sledge hammer bashing a donated 1984 Oldsmobile 98 before the Homecoming bonfire Thursday,
Oct. 2. Phillip Lascano looked on. Proceeds from the car bashing will help fund Project Graduation next May.
BAND STAND – Casey Couch inaugurated a new perch for the drum set in the stands at Eagle Stadium Friday. Band Director Eric Cooksey
asked the School Board to provide a space and it is now in the lower level of the stands.
PINT-SIZED PEP SQUAD – Pep Squad members from left, Kylie Dominguez, Katie Jahn and Landry Lowrance lined up to cheer at halftime
Friday in the Homecoming game between the Sanderson Eagles and the visiting Buena Vista Longhorns. The Pep Squad is made up of future
cheerleaders.
NAME IN LIGHTS – The “S” on the side of the hill east of Sanderson Stadium greeted fans at last week’s Homecoming football game. The
hometown Eagles defeated the visiting Buena Vista Longhorns 58-21.
BACK IN TIME – This Model A Ford, one of more than half a dozen vintage Fords, passed through Sanderson and Marathon this week. Seen
in the background are the Glass Mountains. The cars from the Victoria Model A Club were headed to Fort Davis for a short stay.
LAWMEN – Terrell County Sheriff Clint McDonald, left, greeted new Deputy Robert Lewing, center, to the community Saturday. Looking
on was the newest deputy before Lewing, Paul Tidwell. The officers met members of the community at Sanderson Lion’s Club Welcome Party
at Bicentennial Park. McDonald is also president of the Lion’s Club.

ROAD CLOSED – State Highway 170 remained closed between Lajitas and Presidio this week because of extensive storm damage. Texas Department
of Transportation crews are at work every day, including weekends, to repair the extensive damage as soon as possible. “We want to
ensure that the roadway is safe for the traveling public prior to reopening,” Alpine Area Engineer Chris Weber said.

RUNNERS – Sanderson Cross Country boys and girls both placed second at the Big Bend Mountain Rumble cross country

MISS RODEO – Amanda Renfro of North Richland Hills, left, was crowned 2008 Miss Rodeo last week at Sul Ross State University. The
2007 Queen Ashley David Kaufman congratulated the new queen. She was named at the 63rd annual National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association
event at SALE arena.
ROAD WORK – Texas Department of Transportation crews have a big job trying to rebuild State Highway 170, also known as the River Road.
Flooding along the Rio Grande has closed the road and it is expected to remain closed for a long time. The road has been closed for
several weeks between Lajitas and Presidio.
