BAND BOOSTERS – Lindy Stumberg, president of the Band Boosters, was among about 20 parents who turned out Monday to oppose a rumored plan by Terrell County schools to discontinue the band program. Among those looking on from the front row were Robin Turner and sons Scooter and Otto.

LOG ON – Terrell County ISD Technology Director David Carrasco helped first grader Justin Flax negotiate a new 19-inch flat-screen computer this week. Also struggling with technology, front, was his son Elijah. Through a Piρon Foundation grant, the school acquired 25 new computers for the Elementary School lab and saved the school some $20,000, Carrasco said.

MOVING DAY – A modular building arrived at the site of the Sanderson Clinic last week. Terrell County acquired the building so Cactus Health Services, Inc., can get all its operations in one place. The administrative offices are currently in temporary space at Canyons RV Park.

ATCHER SERVICE – Servers, from left, Billy Black, Hannah Black and Sandy Pierce stood prepared to deliver barbecue chicken and trimmings to guests at the Pavilion in Bicentennial Park Sunday. The dinner was a benefit for three grandchildren of David and Susan Brotherton who were killed in a California house fire this month.

BENEVOLENT SMOKE – This smoke was just from a barbecue. Smoke wafted up from some grilles Sunday as the community turned out for a benefit dinner. Volunteers prepared chicken and all the trimmings with the proceeds to go to a fund for the three grandchildren of David and Susan Brotherton, killed in a house fire near San Diego, CA, Feb. 6.

TROPHY CHEERLEADER – Davis Stumberg of Sanderson took home more cheerleading trophies last week. He competed at the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championships in Dallas and brought home a National Championship jacket and a first-place trophy.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE – Jeffrey L. Zonis of Scottsdale, AZ, looked over some books with Cactus Health Services, Inc., Chief Operating Officer Teresa Smith this week. Zonis has been in Sanderson helping CHSI get on sound financial footing.

SOME DO COME HOME– Jackie Sandifer, a Sanderson High School graduate of 2003, is home doing her student teaching.  she attended Sul ross State University where she will graduate in May.  She is currently lending a hand to her former coach Jerry Garza in tennis.

ALL TIME RECORD – Mike and Marsha Borders of Las Vegas, NV, standing on each side of their car last year, will hold the record for all time at the Big Bend Open Road Race between Sanderson and Fort Stockton. The race apparently is no more. The Borders hold the speed record for the course at 172.584 mph.

SPUR OF THE MOMENT  – A pair of custom-made spurs by Cotton Elliott are being raffled in support of the Texas Cowboy Poetry Gathering Friday, Feb. 29, at Marshall Auditorium at Sul Ross State University.  Tickets are available for the event from any Gathering committee member or at the University Center information booth during the Gathering.
