SMOOTH OPERATORS – Edwardo Moreno, foreground, and Jesus Hernandez, both of Houston, were at work smoothing newly-poured concrete
on the Sanderson High School tennis courts this week. The two are employees of Trans Texas Tennis, Inc., of Houston, contractors on
the new lighted courts behind the old high school building.
MEDICAL LESSON – Justice of the Peace and EMT Abby Roberts, left, and EMT Leila Cash told Terrell County 4-H Club members Monday what
it takes to provide ambulance service to the county. The medical service “show and tell” was part of the meeting in which kids also
learned about coloring eggs for Easter.
STATE OF THE ART – Sanderson High School junior Raquel Hinkley, top picture, has been selected as the Sanderson delegate to Girls
State in Seguin in June. Miriam Nuñez, not shown, is the alternate. Jimmy Rapp, left, and Carver Tate, bottom picture, will attend
Boys State in Austin. The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary sponsor students to the mock government each year based on grades and
character.
SANDERSON – Sanderson High School juniors Jimmy Rapp and Carver Tate were chosen to attend Boys State and Raquel Hinkley was chosen for Girls State with Miriam Nuñez as an alternate.
HANDOFF – Sanderson trackster Juliana Castro handed the baton to Hannah Black in a relay race at the Buena Vista Track Meet last week.
The Lady Eagles won first place in the meet with 155 points.
GOING UP – The duplex portion of the eight-unit Dos Lobos housing project at Mansfield and Third in Sanderson is quickly taking shape.
Owner Sharon Wolfe said the four-bedroom corner house, shown just beyond the duplex, will be ready within about two weeks. All of
the new housing, including two others a few blocks away on Hackberry should be completed in eight to nine weeks.
JUNIOR SPEEDSTERS – Sanderson Junior High School’s Taylor Roberts racked up a pair of first-place victories at the Buena Vista Track
Meet last week. Close behind in the 2,400-meter run was another Junior Eagle, Shawn Stegall.
LUCK OF THE DRAW – Analise Galvan drew a ticket for a door prize from a jar held by Terrell County Commissioner and auctioneer Kenn
Norris Monday as Matthew Portillo looked on. The children took turns drawing door prize winners at the Band Booster chili supper at
St. James Hall.
BIG BAND – It wasn’t quite like the big bands of old but the Sanderson High School Band was out in as much force as it could muster
Monday. The Band Boosters provided chile and baked potatoes to band fans to raise money for its programs. Elementary art and music
teacher Sandy Breckenridge is filling in as band director after the resignation last month of Tom Torres.
LOTSA CHILI – A sizeable crowd turned out Monday night for the Band Booster Chili Supper. Band fans provided about $1,000 for band
programs and a scholarship given each year to a band senior who has been in band for four consecutive years.
GRAND LASCANOS – Somewhere in Time owners Dale Lascano, left, and Claudia Lascano presided over a ribbon cutting and grand opening
last week. The new store on East Oak Street in Sanderson bills itself as the “Little shop with a big personality.”
KINDER-GOATS? – Sanderson Elementary PK, kindergarten and first grade students found out where blankets come from when they got to
watch the disappearing art of goat shearing recently. Shown from left were kindergartner Kate Roberts, first grader Wyatt Mills and
Christian Rosas of PK. The students watched award-winning shearers do their thing when they visited Big Canyon Ranch, one of a few
local ranches that still raise goats.
