BURNING BUSH – It wasn’t Moses but firefighters from a wide area that found much of the grassland – and bushes – on fire Friday. This was a scene at a 51,400-acre fire in northern Terrell and eastern Pecos County. Several structures were threatened but none lost in the massive fire.

TOO CLOSE – Thick smoke moved in on vehicles of responders to a major grass fire about 30 miles north of Sanderson Friday. The fire burned all weekend and into Monday, threatening several structures but none was damaged and there were no reported injuries.

ALREADY STARTINGOne might conclude that the annual Buzzard Rally in Sanderson has already begun with the number of motorcycles seen in town last weekend. This was the scene at Town and Country convenience store Sunday. Hundreds of “bikers” are expected for the rally April 4 to 7 at the Legion Hall.

BURNING QUESTION – More of the  major grass fire near the Pecos-Terrell County line Friday.  Smoke billowing up was visible from Sanderson 30 miles to the south. High winds and single-digit relative humidity caused widespread wildfires throughout West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.

DEER ATTACKThis doe was seen nonchalantly munching on a bush on Highway 90 in east Sanderson over the weekend. It is thought to be the same animal that attacked a young child last week. Game Warden Dan Waddell warns that deer are still wild animals and even those who have become somewhat domesticated by feeding can still be a danger.

EEEEEEK – Ernestina Gonzalez shrieked at the thought of the huge snake laid on her shoulders, as she thought she was posing for a picture. The snake was part of the circus in town last weekend.

GEAR UP SHIRTS – Sanderson State Bank has provided new shirts for kids in the GEAR UP program. Shown from left were L.A. NEW LAWMANTerrell County’s latest citizen, Vince Perna, was sworn in Friday as the fourth Terrell County deputy sheriff by District/ County Clerk Martha Allen. Perna, a native of New York City and later Middletown near West Point, has worked for the Fort Stockton Police Department and the Pecos County Sheriff’s Office.

BALANCING ACT – Little Rulito the clown’ does an acrobatic act with his parents, Guillermina and Videla Euvall.  Circo Cirque circus came to town and performed a free show for Sanderson at the Downie Roping Arena.
