WELCOMETerrell County Sheriff Clint McDonald, right, welcomed his third deputy to the department this week. Keith Williamson brings 25 years of law enforcement experience to the job. He and his wife, Sandra, are now looking for a place to live in Sanderson.

SOMEWHERECo-Owner Claudia Lascano posed in front of her new shop at 409 E. Oak in Sanderson, which offers a line of gift items and other merchandise. A ribbon cutting is planned for 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, March 8, and an open house will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

DRAWINGJesse and Lenia Bolton of Dryden took home a $250 gift certificate from sports store Cabela’s in a drawing at the Terrell County Predator’s Contest. The pair also scored second high in points with 2,200 behind winner Robert Rivera of Sanderson.

WHISTLE STOPThe Amtrak Sunset Limited passenger train makes a “whistle stop” in Sanderson on its way between Los Angeles and New Orleans. In a “whistle stop,” the train stops only if a passenger has booked either a departure from Sanderson or an arrival here.

LET THERE BE LIGHT – Light poles have been installed and dirt work is well under way for new tennis courts being built behind the old high school building.  The tennis courts are the first really visible evidence of the facilities being provided under a $14 million bond issue approved by the voters last May.

TOP TRAPPERRobert Rivera of Sanderson, right, accepted a $500 gift certificate to Cabela’s sports store from contest sponsor Jon Tom Lowrance this week. Rivera won the Terrell County Predator Contest with 2,800 points. Contestants turned in 145 predators during the contest period.

UP AND OVERSanderson Eagle Davis Stumberg sailed over the high-jump bar at six feet to take first place in that event in the Rio Grande Relays in Sanderson last week. Track teams from 15 area schools flooded the Eagle athletic fields.

CLOSINGThe Texas Youth Commission “boot camp” at Sheffield will close at the end of this month. Some 60 employees will be looking for new jobs or a transfer to another facility. The 17 current offenders will be transferred to another camp.

GOING, GOINGThe small building at the corner of Oak and Second in Sanderson was fast disappearing last week.  Matt Lusk paid $25 to Terrell County for salvage in removing the building to make room for a future Convention Center.  Lusk said he salvaged some wood and probably as much as 80 percent of the cinder block would be re-usable.

PUT IT THEREAshley Hagelgans won fourth place in the shot put at the Rio Grande Relays track and field events Saturday in Sanderson. Ashley heaved the heavy ball 57 feet, eight inches.
