MUSEUM MUPPETS – Sanderson kindergarten and first grade children visited the Children’s Museum in Midland last week, thanks to the Piñon Foundation. They were also able to practice their social skills by eating lunch at the Olive Garden. Playing in the kitchen part of the “miniature town” were Kate Roberts, Kailey Dominguez and Analise Galvan. Almost visible behind Analise was Justin Maguire.

SENIOR TENNIS – Five Sanderson High School seniors were in the first physical education class to use the new tennis courts Wednesday. They were, from left, Bubba Ramirez, Jenny Hernandez, Ben Rubio, Hannah Black and Davis Stumberg.

THE SITEA lot at the corner of Second and Oak, or Highway 90, in Sanderson has been cleared of all structures except the “Little Green House” to make way for a new convention center. Terrell County has gotten a green light for the Attorney General to proceed with plans for the facility.

NOW OPENThe blue waters of the Bicentennial Park swimming pool were inviting even from on high this week in this photo taken from the top of nearby Hominy Hill. The pool is now open for private parties and will be open for public use May 31. The picture was taken on the Cactus Capital Hiking and Nature Trail.

TO CHEER FORSanderson High School cheerleaders for the next school year were named last week. From left, they are Lizette Ramirez, Clarissa Brotherton, Alexa Davis, Taylor Johnson, Blakeney Chriesman, Roxanna Rodriguez and Ashley Hernandez. Ashley later informed the school she will move this summer and will not be able to participate.

YOUR SERVICE – Blakeney Chriesman prepared to serve on the new Sanderson High School tennis courts Wednesday. Looking on was Ashley Hernandez. The courts officially opened this week, the first project in a $14 million school bond issue approved last year. Story on Page 1.

FOR SALE - Gary Morgan, who recently moved to Sanderson from Tennessee, is trying to sell his 1978 Sorrell Guppy, a one-place biplane built from a kit.

COURT’S IN SESSIONThe six new tennis courts behind Sanderson High School were completed this week. It is the first project to be completed under the $14 million bond issue approved by voters last year. Superintendent Gary Hamilton said more students participate in tennis than any other activity, sports or otherwise.

OPEN QUESTIONTerrell County Commissioners Monday debated ways to reserve the pavilion in Bicentennial Park. Because there is no way to secure the facility, there is no way to enforce a reservation. It’s still first-come, first-served and available to all.      

GO BOWLINGSecond grader Luke Carroll and first grader Kailey Dominguez joined their classmates at a bowling alley last week. They were part of the Accelerated Reading program in Fort Stockton and put away the books long enough to bowl a spare or a strike or two.

YOUNG VISITORSSecond graders in Irma Mendoza’s class at Sanderson Elementary visited Terrell County Commissioners Court last month. Then each child – and their teacher as well – wrote letters of thanks to their community leaders.

FAMILY AFFAIRRachel Marcovitch of Sanderson posed recently with hubby T/Sgt. David Marcovitch and twin sons Nicholas and Nathan. Which twin is which? How do we know? They‘re twins.

AND ONE MORECamilia Ortega of Fort Stockton became the 22nd member of her extended family to receive a Sul Ross degree. Ortega received her BA in Administrative Systems and Business Technology last week from Sul Ross President R. Vic Morgan.

MISSING MISSYSeniors at Sanderson High School Class of ’08 painted Hackberry Street in an annual tradition this week. They remembered classmate Melissa Cruz who was killed last year in an auto accident. Graduation will be May 30.

CORNER POCKETDavid “Vito” Martinez enjoyed a quick game of pool with Michael Galvan of Sheffield recently. Michael was in town visiting his mom, Rosella Juarez, for Mother’s Day.
