STUDENT ATHLETESBesides being named valedictorian and salutatorian last week, Danell Graham and Davis Stumberg were also named “student athletes of the year.” The two and eight others will get their diplomas at Graduation ceremonies tonight, May 30, in the High School Auditorium.

ALL STARSRaul Salazar, left, Hannah Black and Ben Rubio will play in the Six Man Coaches All Star games in Lubbock in July. The boys will play football and Hannah will play in the basketball game.

GOING DOWNRalston Rosas operated a bulldozer for ranchers Albert and Sheri Thorn this week. They were demolishing the old W.D. O’Bryant home in West Sanderson to make room for a new 4-H livestock facility. The Piñon Foundation of Oklahoma City acquired the property and will pay to build the pens.  

SALUTEAshley Hagelgans was honored by her junior high school principal Jerry Garza last week. Ashley was chosen as the school’s salutatorian.

ACCELERATED READINGTop point gainers in the Sanderson Elementary School Accelerated Reading program for the school year were, from left, Luis Garza, Jesse Roberts, Mikey Shoemaker, Noah Aguilar and Kailey Dominguez.

FIGHTING HEARTDarren Seidel received the “fighting heart” award from Head Coach and Athletic Director Mark Dominguez Thursday night. Looking on were assistant coaches Jerry Garza (partially hidden) and Leighton Conway.

PRINCIPAL’S PETRosa Gonzalez was named to the principal’s choice award by Terrell County ISD Superintendent and High School Principal Gary Hamilton. The honor came at the annual Awards Banquet Thursday, May 22, at St. James Hall.

LEST WE FORGETNancy Henderson, left, and Mary Nell Hinkle were among the volunteers placing flags at the graves of US military veterans Monday. The American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary have placed flags at the Cedar Grove Cemetery and provided flags for Santa Rita for several years.

IN MEMORIAMMargaret Farley of Sanderson joined with several other volunteers Monday placing flags at the tombs of military veterans on Memorial Day. The American Legion and Legion Auxiliary provides flags for veterans in both Cedar Grove and Santa Rita Cemeteries.

SACKED – Hunter Truesdell and Daniel Rodriguez race for the finish line last week at Elementary Field Day before having  lunch at Bicentennial Park.

YOUNG SINGERS – The Sanderson Elementary School presented its Spring Elementary Music Program last week in the High School Auditorium. Participating in one number, from left, were Shyanne Mills, Austen Stepp, Al Johnson, Jaime Rosas and John Pierce.

RESCUE – Jose “Chicken” Lopez, left, and Ruben Rosas rescued a stray kitten that had gotten stuck in the wheel of Francis Corbett’s car. She drove off from a store and heard the cry for help. The rescuers had to remove the wheel from the car to get at the animal. It survived but it probably won’t try to hide in the wheel of a car any time soon.

DIG THISRoad and Bridge workers Les McKinney, left, and Dale Stratton wielded shovels this week putting a sprinkler system in at Cedar Grove Cemetery. The county bought the materials and county workers are installing the system. Water anyone?

WHEEE – Russell Martin appeared to be having a blast at Elementary Field Day last week. The kids cooled off on a water slide after Field Day events.

BEFOREThe old W.D. O'Bryant home on US Highway 90 in west Sanderson stood idle for many years. But it is no more. The land is being cleared for new livestock pens for Terrell County 4-H. The Piñon Foundation acquired the property and donated it to the 4-H and will pay to build the pens. Demolition was donated by Albert and Sheri Thorn.

UP AND OVER – Matthew Portillo ran up and over on the obstacle course last week at Elementary Field Day.  After events, the students headed to Bicentennial Park for lunch.
