SMOKE SCREEN – A big column of smoke was visible over Iron Mountain from a 7,500-acre grass fire in the Glass
Mountains last weekend. The smoke was also visible from Fort Stockton and Sanderson Friday afternoon but the blaze was well under
control early this week.
GOING DOWN – Ralston Rosas operated a bulldozer for ranchers Albert and Sheri Thorn this week. They were demolishing the old W.D.
O’Bryant home in West Sanderson to make room for a new 4-H livestock facility. The Piñon Foundation of Oklahoma City acquired the
property and will pay to build the pens.
BEFORE – The old W.D. O’Bryant home on US Highway 90 in west Sanderson stood idle for many years. But it is no more. The land is being
cleared for new livestock pens for Terrell County 4-H. The Piñon Foundation acquired the property and donated it to the 4-H and will
pay to build the pens. Demolition was donated by Albert and Sheri Thorn.
NEVER TOO OLD – Sam Cavness of Marathon turns 90 tomorrow. He posed for a picture this week and then headed out to cut the lawn. There
will be a birthday party from 2 to 5 p.m. tomorrow at the home of Sam and Patsy Cavness to mark the special day.
FLY-BY-NIGHTERS – Mark and Mesa Glover tried out a new swing last week at The Post Park. “Weed growth continues to be thick and slimy
at the best swimming hole in Marathon,” Glover said.
READY TO READ – Marathon students were treated to a puppet show last week on Field day. The show was performed by the “Friends
of the Marathon Public Library.” The show was to promote the upcoming summer reading program.
FIRE DOOR NEEDED – The lack of fire alarms and fire rated doors at both Marathon school campuses have caused concern for Facilities

WHEEE – Russell Martin appeared to be having a blast at Elementary Field day last week. The kids cooled off on a water slide after
Field Day events.
RESCUE – Jose “Chicken” Lopez, left, and Ruben Rosas rescued a stray kitten that had gotten stuck in the wheel of Francis Corbett’s
car in Sanderson recently. She drove off from a store and heard the cry for help. The rescuers had to remove the wheel from the car
to get at the animal. It survived but it probably won’t try to hide in the wheel of a car any time soon.
GIVE 'EM A BIG HAND – Friends of the Marathon Public Library performed a puppet show for Marathon Elementary kids last week.The cast consisted of Carol Henthorne as Horace, Carol Townsend as Alli the alligator, Steve Griffis portrayed Rocky, Jacqui Boyd was the voice of teacher Mrs. Hartwell and Arlene Griffis was the narrator.
