NOT HERE – Billowing cumulonimbus clouds have been seen all around Sanderson in recent weeks but the rain gauge has generally stayed
dry. This was south of town, probably in Mexico, last week. There has been some rain in the county, including a brief shower Wednesday,
but Sanderson has recorded less than an inch of rain all year.
WARDEN #1 – Saul Aguilar is one of two new game wardens stationed in Terrell County. He posed with his wife Marcie, and three charges, Gabby, Isaiah and Adam Michael, at graduation from the academy.
DON’T BUGG ME – Brother David Bugg from Wilmer was in town last week for his third run at Vacation Bible School. An average of 50
kids attended each day.
DON’T LISTEN, LOOK – Ashton Corder took part in Vacation Bible School last week. She taught the kids sign language. Ashton was one
of seven local teens that showed up to help out.
A WORTHY CAUSE – The ushers patiently waited to take up a love offering at the vacation Bible school family night program Thursday.
It was decided to give an offering to the Texas Baptist Men. Ushers, from left, were Megan Rodriguez, Gabby Holguin, Thayer Finley
and Al Johnson.
HERE I COME – Seven-year-old Savannah Lopez “dribbled” the ball toward the net this week at the summer recreation program. Savannah
is visiting. She is the granddaughter of Mary Ann and Pete Sanchez.
BATTER UP – Fernando Sanchez of Los Coyotes awaited a pitch this week during a Summer Softball League game in Sanderson. Catcher for
Lonestar was Ashley Guerra and Robert Rivera was the umpire.
HIGH SCHOOL HERE – It’s a vacant lot now but the new high school classrooms to be provided as part of a $14 million Terrell County
school bond issue will be built as an extension south from the existing junior high school building. Blue prints for the project are
“approximately” 90 percent completed and work should begin by fall.
PEANUT GALLERY – Three young fans cheered for their favorites at the Summer Softball League game in Sanderson this week. The cousins,
from left, were Annette Roberts, Nicholas Mitchell and Megan Seidel.
FOR SALE – A signed and numbered photograph of a white jackrabbit by Russell Smith of San Angelo is being raffled off by the Sanderson
American Legion Auxiliary. Tickets for the work by the author of the book “The Gun That Wasn’t There” are $1 each or six for $5 and
are available from any Auxiliary officer. The photo will also be available at the Silent Auction July 5 on the Courthouse Square.
GEAR UP FOR GEARUP – Sanderson High School freshmen Ernestina Gonzalez and Andy Milstead were among 130 area teens taking part in
GEARUP programs last week at Sul Ross State University. The program started with the students in seventh grade in 2005 and will stay
with them beyond high school graduation.
OLD AND NEW – The old tennis courts behind the Sanderson High School Building will see new life as a parking lot. They were replaced
by six brand new tennis courts, the first project to be built in a $14 million school bond issue.
TOO STEEP – Not everything goes according to plan. One of the “punch list” items at the new tennis courts behind Sanderson High School
is that the new handicap parking spaces are “too steep.” New handicap parking will be provided at the northwest corner of the tennis
courts as part of the high school renovation project.
HOLE IN THE GROUND – Albert and Sheri Thorn dug some eight-foot holes in the ground this week and erected poles for warning sirens.
They were contractors to Storm Sirens, Inc., of Norman, OK, which is putting two sirens in Sanderson, one at the Road and Bridge yard
on the east side of town and one at the Texas Department of Transportation yard on the west side. The two should provide warnings
to the entire town of Sanderson.
