CAP & GOWN – The 2008 graduating class at Marathon High School was three strong last week. Moving on to the next phase of their young lives, from left, were Devin Kolesar, Randy Ramirez and Victoria Zimmerman.

PASSING THROUGH Dan Altenburg paused for lunch in Marathon this week on an east-to-west coast-to-coast bicycle trip. He is pedaling from St. Augustine, FL, to San Diego, CA, raising money for water wells in Africa.   

MT. ORD FIRE – More grass fires, including one about 15 miles west southwest of Marathon on the flanks of Mount Ord. One residence was threatened but the fire was quickly controlled by Texas Forest Service aircrews. And residents of Jeff Davis County were alerted to a 20,000-acre fire moving their way late Wednesday from Presidio County affecting Bloys Encampment, Crows Nest and Apache Pines.

MOVING UP – Isaac Briones waved goodbye to one phase of his life as he graduated from kindergarten in Marathon last week. Next year, he’ll be in first grade. Joining him were Josh Guzman and Monique Perez. 

WALL OF PROTESTThe “Friendship to Hope Vigil” at Santa Elena Canyon this week protested plans for a wall along the border. “Along with people in Brownsville and San Diego, we gathered to show support for people on both sides of the US-Mexico border who are suffering because of a border wall," Terlingua community organizer Adrienne Evans said.

STICK MAN – An unidentified stick man was seen running through brush south of Marathon this week. He has eluded capture thus far but is still believed to be in the area.

TOP AWARDSanderson High School Salutatorian Davis Stumberg posed for a picture with his parents, Forrest and Lindy Stumberg after graduation Friday night. Davis won the coveted $32,000 Rose Silverthorne scholarship among his honors.

PASS IN REVIEWMembers of the Marfa Sector Honor Guard paraded the colors past the formation of area law enforcement officers during a memorial service for fallen officers at Sul Ross State University last week.  A new “honor board” lists 111 names of West Texas law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
