WOW, THE KINKSTER – Entertainer and politician Kinky Friedman was greeted by Lou Pauls Saturday. Friedman was keynote speaker at the Way Out West Book Festival, sponsored by the Alpine Rotary Club, to benefit the new Alpine Library project.

NEW BIKE – Lawson Meiers won one of four bikes given to children for incentive prizes at the Marathon Library Summer Reading Program last week. Others were Noah Aguilar, Sarah Arenas and Candace Aguilar. An anonymous benefactor donated the bicycles. Elizabeth Hernandez, Capri Garlick and Bianca Cardoza each won $100 for their reading prowess.

DO I HEAR $1,000 – Capri Garlick showed off a cake for the dessert auction last weekend at the Fish Fry. One cake went for as much as $1,000. The event raised over $11,000 for renovations on the Community Center.

SERVING – Michelle Campbell posed for a shot last week in Marathon. Volleyball practice has begun and school begins August 25. The Mustangs hope to field a football and a girls volleyball team this year.

SCHOLAR – Rosa Gonzalez of Sanderson was one of more than 140 students to receive scholarships at Sul Ross State University. Gonzalez, a 2008 Sanderson High School graduate, received a PASS Participant Stipend.

SADDLE UP – Kinsey Chandler of Sanderson won another saddle in barrel racing recently at the American Junior Rodeo Association Finals in San Angelo. The ten year old now has four saddles and more than 20 buckles gained from her sport.
