WHAT’S COOKIN’? – Joey Carrasco, Elijah Carrasco, Jacob Helmers and Luke Carroll cooked up some fun at the Terrell County 4-H Club cooking class last week. The four concocted a fruit pizza.

SCHOOL DAYS – School starts Monday in Sanderson – and just about everywhere in Texas. Terrell County Road and Bridge worker Jose “Chicken” Lopez was spotted touching up the crosswalk between the Senior and Junior High School buildings this week. Watch out for kids, drivers.

DEEP HOLE – New Terrell County ISD Band Director Eric Cooksey told school board members he is preparing for a “long, slow incline from a deep, deep hole” in the school’s music program. A “marching band” is not in the cards in the foreseeable future but he said he hopes to have some presence at the first Eagle football game Friday, Aug. 29.

UP IN THE AIR – Kailey Dominguez got a bird’s eye view this week as part of a stunt and tumbling class for the Sanderson School Pep squad. Hoisting Kailey, from left, were Grace Jahn, Megan Seidel and Ashley Barron. Joseph Torres from the Sul Ross Extreme Rebel all-star cheer team looked on.

SOGGY FANS – Though the rain came down in Balmorhea last weekend, Ruben Rosas, Dohnavon Anaya and David and Susan Brotherton stood their ground in the lonely bleachers cheering on the Eagles till the end.

NOT THE BRADY BUNCH – Angelina, Robert Craig, Joseph, Timothy, Aundria and Alliyanna are the children of Annette & Robert Harris. They are new to town and are looking forward to the new year.

JUST VISITIN’ – Grace Pollitt, 11, and her brother Caden Villegas, both of Austin, were in Sanderson last week visiting Grandma Romelia Cleveland. Caden was fresh from the “State Wars” roller hockey championships in Cincinnati were he was named an all star and as a player on the organization’s “Team American.” He’s some roller hockey player.

VOICE FROM WASHINGTON – US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez told a Sanderson audience last week another $165,000 grant has been approved for Sanderson’s Cactus Health Services, Inc. District/County Clerk Martha Allen, left, asked a question while County Treasurer Lynda Helmers looked on.

BIG DIP – Joey Carrasco took a dip in the Bicentennial Pool this week at the Terrell County 4-H Club sign up party. Waiting their turn were Al Johnson and Isaiah Aguilar.

AMERICA IS BEST – Sanderson High School junior Jessica Garza said a trip to Europe this summer as a “People to People ambassador” convinced her “America is best.” Jessica was one of 44 students on the trip to six European countries in June, financed by donations from friends and neighbors, whom she thanks with a slide show of the trip Tuesday.

PECOS BRIDGE – The Pecos River Bridge near Langtry, which soars 270 feet above the legendary river, is being rehabilitated under a $4.25 million contract with SCR Construction of Richmond. Traffic is being restricted on one way only during the 20-month project and heavy and wide vehicles are urged to take a detour through Sheffield and Sonora.

ABOUT WILDLIFE – Texas Parks and Wildlife Executive Director Carter Smith gave the keynote address at the Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference last week at Sul Ross State University. More than 200 landowners, wildlife enthusiasts and other participants attended the two-day event.
