BIG BIG CANYONThe normally-dry Big Canyon draw was a roiling torrent as it passed under State Highway 349 north of Dryden last week. Both approaches to the bridge were washed out in the heavy rains as was one approach to Independence Creek about 15 miles north. Heavy debris also was piled up on the Big Canyon and Meyers Canyon bridges.

FACE FIRST Sanderson Eagle Ryan Rosas and Fort Davis Indian Mark Cauble both got a close-up view of the turf at Eagle Stadium last week. Ryan had just stopped Mark on one of his runs early in the game. The Indians “45d” the Eagles just as the first half buzzer sounded.

THAT’S ALLSanderson Eagles Phillip Lascano and Ryan Rosas teamed up to stop a run by Fort Davis Indian Marcus Hartnett last week. Eagle J.D. Brotherton and Indian Adrian moved in to help their teammates. The Eagles came out second best in a “mercy killing” 46-0.

BAND PLAYED ONThe Sanderson High School Band is learning new songs and improving day by day. New Band Director Eric Cooksey told the School Board Monday he used orange jerseys for last week’s football game against Fort Davis but, as the weather gets cooler, he plans to order hoodies provided by the Band Boosters. 

LONG RUNSanderson Eagle Vicky Busch, top picture, placed seventh in the Balmorhea Invitational cross country meet last week. Below, Taylor Roberts was ahead of big brother Travis in the same meet. The girls placed first overall and the boys second in the contest.

CROSS COUNTRY BOYS & GIRLSThe Sanderson Eagles boys and girls cross country teams  posed for a picture this week. RIVERA RUNNERIsabel Rivera came in eighth place in the Balmorhea Invitational cross country meet last week. The girls team came in first place overall and the boys placed second overall. It’s off to Wink tomorrow.

PIGTAILSAbby Carrasco of Sanderson showed off some pigtails that were no longer a part of her anatomy last week. Abby let Country Clips remove ten inches of her hair to donate to “Locks of Love,” an organization that provides wigs to children who have lost hair because of disease.

PEPPER GUITARClassical guitarist George Pepper was this week’s guest at Sanderson Arts and Education Alliance “Toe Tappin’ Tuesday” presentation at the Bicentennial Park Pavilion. Pepper, of Alpine, has a degree from Berklee College in Boston and a Masters from Texas State at San Marcos. He has performed for a party by J.P. Bryant in Marathon, wedding, at Cibolo Creek Ranch and elsewhere.

NEW HERESanderson school enrollment is up by four with the addition of the Bon family to the schools’ roster. Shown in front were Jacob, left, and James and David, Junior, and Amber in back.
