The Huckaby Wildland Fire: What a Small Town Learns From a Close Call
Some fires get remembered for how much they destroyed. Others get remembered for how much they nearly destroyed, and for what the community did in the gap between "nearly" and "actually." The Huckaby wildland fire — sometimes recorded in official fire histories as the Huckabee Fire — belongs mostly to the second category, and that's exactly why it's still worth telling.
What happened
The fire broke out on April 30, roughly 30 miles southeast of Fort Stockton in Pecos County, sparked by a downed power line — one of the most common causes of rangeland fire in dry, windy West Texas country. Conditions that spring were about as favorable to a fast-moving grass fire as they get: dry fuel load across the open range, low humidity, and wind. Within days the fire had grown past 90,000 acres, and by the time crews got it to roughly 45 percent containment, it had burned an estimated 96,000 to 98,000 acres — enough to rank among the dozen largest wildfires recorded in Texas history.
Satellite monitoring, which by then had become a standard tool for tracking fires across country too vast and too sparsely populated for ground observers to cover on their own, picked up the fire's heat signature clearly enough to saturate infrared sensors built to measure exactly this kind of extreme burn — a sign of just how intense the fire front actually was as it moved across the Trans-Pecos grassland.
The Huckaby fire didn't happen in isolation. Texas had already been through one of its worst wildfire stretches on record just two years earlier, when the East Amarillo Complex fire tore across the Panhandle in March 2006, burning more than 900,000 acres and killing 13 people — at the time, the deadliest wildfire event in state history. That earlier disaster reshaped how Texas thought about rural fire response: more investment in Texas A&M Forest Service resources, more attention to mutual-aid coordination between small volunteer departments, and a sharper statewide awareness that a grass or brush fire in dry, windy conditions could grow from a downed power line to a six-figure-acreage disaster in a matter of days, not weeks. The Huckaby fire, coming so soon after, was in some ways a test of whether those lessons had actually taken hold out in the Trans-Pecos — country every bit as dry and wind-exposed as the Panhandle, just far more sparsely populated.
What was at stake
This wasn't empty country. In the fire's path sat the Sherbino Wind Farm and Mesa Vineyard, along with active natural gas production facilities — real infrastructure and real livelihoods, not just open range. Crews prioritized protecting the gas facilities, and by all accounts succeeded in keeping the fire off them. Workers connected to the wind farm and surrounding ranch operations began voluntary evacuations as the fire's size and unpredictability grew, a decision that cost time and disruption in the short term and very likely prevented injury or worse.
Fort Stockton sits roughly 60 miles from Sanderson, close enough that a fire of this size in Pecos County wasn't a story that stayed neatly inside one county's boundary. Smoke, wind-driven embers, and the very real possibility of a fire jumping containment lines don't respect county lines any more than the ranching economy that spans this whole stretch of the Trans-Pecos does. A fire this size, this close, was everyone's business.
The Sherbino Wind Farm itself was a fairly new kind of neighbor to have in that country — wind development in the Trans-Pecos and the wider Permian Basin region was still ramping up in the mid-to-late 2000s, adding a different category of asset to what local and county fire response had to be prepared to protect, alongside the cattle, gas wells, and homesteads that had always defined this landscape. A fire this size was, among other things, an early real-world test of how ranching-country fire response would need to adapt as that mix of infrastructure kept changing.
Why it stayed a close call and not a catastrophe
Texas wildland firefighting in country like this depends on a layered response: state Forest Service crews with the equipment and expertise to fight a fire of this scale, local and county volunteer fire departments who know the terrain and the ranch roads better than any outside crew ever could, and the ranchers and facility operators on the ground who often spot trouble and start responding before an official call even goes out. None of those pieces work well in isolation. It's the combination — outside resources brought to bear quickly, local knowledge directing where those resources actually need to go, and residents who evacuate and cooperate instead of trying to ride it out — that turned a fire capable of becoming one of the worst in state history into one that, while genuinely enormous, didn't claim the lives or the permanent economic damage a fire that size could easily have caused.
That's the real substance of a "close call." It's not luck, even though luck plays a role in which direction the wind blows on a given afternoon. It's mostly the accumulated effect of preparation that happened long before the fire started: mutual aid agreements between departments that let crews from outside the immediate area respond fast, evacuation plans that facility operators and ranchers already had some version of in mind, and a regional culture where showing up to help with a fire that isn't burning your own land is simply what you do.
What small towns actually take from a fire like this
A wildfire this size, even one that doesn't claim lives, changes how a rural community thinks about risk for years afterward. People who evacuated once tend to take the next evacuation order more seriously. Ranch operations that watched a fire come within miles of their gas wells and wind turbines tend to invest more seriously afterward in fire breaks, defensible space around structures, and clearer plans for moving livestock and equipment on short notice. None of that shows up as a dramatic headline. It shows up quietly, years later, as a community that's measurably better prepared the next time conditions line up the same way — because in country this dry, they eventually will again.
One practical takeaway: if you live or work in fire-prone rural country, the most useful preparation you can do isn't complicated, but it does have to happen before the smoke is visible. Know your evacuation route and a backup route. Keep defensible space — cleared, low-fuel ground — around any structure, well pad, or piece of equipment you can't afford to lose. Know which neighbors and which volunteer department would respond first if a fire started on or near your land, and make sure they know the same about you. The towns and operations that come through a fire like the Huckaby largely intact aren't the ones that got lucky. They're the ones that had already answered those questions before they needed the answers.
